Just a quick post

to let everyone know that the calendars and bags from the previous post have arrived and are gorgeous.  the peelers are in the shop too, although in an as yet unpacked box.  Also, stay tuned for a new look in store.  Very exciting stuff!

Coming soon

So once again I’ve been horribly neglectful of the bloggy, but not of the store and finding tons of fun new things to fill it!  Last week was the Gift Fair which is pretty much my most important trade show of the year for non-clothing items.  And let me say, it may have been the best since I opened the shop.  Maybe its just that the store has now come into its own and I’ve hit my stride in buying for it, but it was just so much fun and less harrowing than it often can be.

Things that I ordered will start arriving soon, but in the meantime, I thought I’d post a little preview of things to come.

First up, this amazing calendar from Waste Not Paper…

This is just a sample of half of the months of this beautiful calendar.  As it says at the bottom of the photo, each month can be removed and on the back of each are the templates and instructions to repurpose the page into something to be used for much longer than just a month.  And the graphics, just gorgeous.

Next up, this cool peeler from Joseph Joseph that’s featured in the NYTimes right now.

Along with this fun little gadget I reordered their nesting kitchen set and magnetic measuring spoons along with a few other new things for your kitchen enjoyment.

And then there’s these great bags from FLUF

REVERSIBLE!!  Who doesn’t love a bag with 2 fantastic fabric choices in 1??

and this is just the perfect everyday handbag.  love love love.

And believe me, that’s just a small sampling of the amazing things to come.

I’ll try and give an update when these and the other new products arrive in store and as always, if you’re not in the Woodstock area and are interested in purchasing, please email me at stilllifemercantile at gmail dot com and we’ll talk.

Because its bag day

I wanted to show off a little craftiness that I’ve been working on.  I had been stickering the store’s shopping bags and while they looked pretty great, it definitely gets pricey to have nice glossy stickers printed up.

I found this great resource for custom rubber stamps and they make just about any size and ship them super quick.  I think I ordered on a Friday and had it by Tuesday.  Plus, I’ve had this stylized peacock feather drawing kicking around in my sketchbook for quite a while.  I originally tried it out with my now-long neglected gocco, but decided to go ahead and carve a stamp using this cool tutorial video (HERE).

Here are the results

I have to say I’m pretty pleased.  And since I have bags, totes and the like on the brain, I’ve decided to try my hand at a little group of cotton totes featuring the peacock feather and either that store logo, or some version of it.  Ink is on its way, and I’ve learned that a brayer is going to be my friend in the future when doing this kind of project.

Can’t wait to show off the results!

Bag it, tag it…

Ah, springtime in the Catskills, tis a glorious thing.

And to celebrate this lovely pocket of hills and green things, I just got these awesome totes in from MAPTOTE

and look, Woodstock even gets a little somtin’ special to denote its innate hippyness

and by hippyness i of course mean awesomeness.

Just $15 and although I’ve got lots right now, something tells me when the weekend rolls around, they’re gonna start going quick-like.  Perfect for locals and visitors alike!  Who doesn’t need another tote?  And this one gives you some upstate street cred.

Oh yeah, and shoot me an email at stilllifemercantile at gmail dot com if you want to order one that way.

Eat me!!

Sometimes I find that I have an item in the store that’s been here for quite some time before I realize that it could be solving one of my many life dilemmas.  Lately, a battle has been raging between myself, my 5 year old kindergarten attending son, and the unending array of sugary treats that seem to be offered at said son’s school cafeteria.  The main issue being as follows, 5 year old would like to buy lunch at school because, A. its cool, and B. it provides the autonomy that every 5 year old desires in life by giving him the opportunity to choose what he eats.  Which, of course, what does every 5 year old want to eat for lunch besides chocolate milk and cookies!?  After a series of reports at bus pick up of “good morning, bad afternoon” in reference to how his day went, I started plying him further with questions about his eating habits in the lunchroom.  What emerged was a pattern of 5 year old food decisions that were not in any way leading to a good afternoon for a sugared up, slightly feral kid and the poor adults that are in charge of wrangling him.

SO, the point of this story is…5 year old is taking his lunch, lovingly packed by his darling mother, to school every day from now until he goes to college.  Despite the nutritious, wholesome, delicious lunch said loving mother has been packing for him, the lunchbox is coming back with uneaten food, usually of the “entree” variety, while the “treats” aka, yogurt, fruit has been scarfed at what I can only imagine is break-neck speed.

Tomorrow morning, lunch in the lunchbox will be adorned to the hilt with these adorable stickers and notes.

Hopefully 5 year old is going to think that the nutritious delicious food is so cute and funny when decorated with the adorable stickers (not to mention the liberal use of the “eat me first” sticker) that he wouldn’t THINK of eating the treats first and leaving the healthy stuff to whither away in the lunchbox.

I’ll have to let you all know how it goes.

In the meantime, if you too are dealing with a similar food related struggle, may I recommend popping in to pick up a set of these really very cute stickers and notes for yourself?  They’re 10 bucks a pack and I tell you what, if it gets my kid to eat his food without quite so much drama, they’d be worth it at double the price!

Happy spring everyone!!

Skeem-in’

What an amazing week this has been here in Woodstock!  The weather has been unreal, sunny, warm, hot even!  I’ve been so happy to have my hands in the dirt this week at home getting my veggie garden prepped and a new bed for cut flowers going.

In-store, the latest news is, there’s a SALE going on and a new shipment of candles from SKEEM arrived this morning!  The sale is mainly on clothing, just about every clothing item is on sale right now, at least 25% off, makin’ room for some wonderful new warm weather clothing stock to go with all the wonderful warm weather!

And the candles, let me tell you, I am in LOVE with these candles.  I first brought them in store in the fall and they sold well, especially around the holidays.  They burn for 90 hours, come in amazing scents like Blood Orange, Ripe Papaya, Tea Leaf and Dune Sage just to name a few, and the best part, the glass vessels have the most beautiful graphics screen printed on and can be used after the candle is all gone!  The gift that keeps on giving!

Check these out:

Gorgeous right?  I love that there’s no extraneous packaging with these and you’re actually left with a usable, beautiful glass after you’re done enjoying the candle.  They’re $22 each and come in 11 different “flavors” right now.  Also, that jewelry I posted about is here and looking pretty cute!  Have a fantastic weekend!

Slowly coming out of hibernation

I was reminded today that I have neglected to post any blog updates here in quite some time.  I’ve been posting to the tumblr blog pretty regularly, but since that’s just images, videos and links, without much in the way of store info, I suppose it was about time to give this bloggy some attention.

So the new iMac arrived last week, and let me just say, I am IN LOVE!  The screen is HUGE and I didn’t even go for the larger size.  Its just an absolutely pleasure getting to know the new guy and I can’t wait to get the POS system up and chugging along on it.  So that’s the next step and is imminent.

In the meantime, to keep myself from going into a complete creative coma, I’ve been tinkering with my stash of beads and wire and chain and whatnots and coming up with a few pretty cool new jewelry pieces.

mostly earrings, but a few necklaces in there too.  i’m working with a stash of quartz points that I’m just in love with along with some experiments in suede that might blossom into something really interesting.  I don’t think I’m going to post them on Etsy, especially since they’re all one-offs right now and they’ll all be in the shop starting tomorrow.  But as always, if you see something here that you love, feel free to email me at stilllifemercantile at gmail.com and I can post a special listing for you in my Etsy shop if you can’t come into the shop.

So, with a glimmer of spring trying to peak through the grey rainy days, I hope everyone is staying cozy and dry and planning their spring visits to Woodstock to stop in and say hi!

In the meantime

While still awaiting the new iMac/POS/ecommerce setup, I started a little tumblr blog.  Its called Still Life Musings and its focus is design, music, and any assortment of things that have caught my eye, but aren’t necessarily directly related to the store (although sometimes they will be).   I’m constantly bookmarking and saving photos and whatnots from my travels across the intertubes and decided I needed a place to put it all, and share!

There will be a link to it over there ——>

But in the meantime, head over HERE and see what sort of musings I’ve been collecting.

Look at all the pretty pretties!

aka Hey look!  I took new pictures of the store and the merchandise!

The store is incredibly well stocked for the holidays and everything is just looking so great right now, I’m quite pleased.  I’ve posted the whole lot of new photos in the Flickr photoset (they’re at the end of the group edit: just figured out how to reorder the photos in the photoset so the new ones are at the beginning, that’s me, hurtling right into 2006!) but here are a few highlights of products I’m especially loving right now.

***woodland critter ornaments by roost***

***ceramic bird box by jonathan adler***

***amazing blue pottery vases by roost (these totally remind me of vintage west german pottery)***

***i am not a paper cup***

***handmade pottery wine stoppers from sicily and silicone wine tags by modern twist (these would make a great hostess gift with a bottle of wine!)***

***candles by skeem (just 2 of the 8 options in the store right now, and the beautiful glass is reusable after the candle is gone) and owl salt and pepper shakers***

***a little bit of everything (notice a theme happening, hoot hoot)***

***handmade nation DVD and companion book***

***shoshona snow’s amazing work***

and really, that’s just the beginning.  It is so fun to be surrounded by so many beautiful objects and inspiring books everyday I’m in the store.

And as always, any of these items can be shipped and I’m happy to do a purchase over the phone or via email.  Just email me at stilllifemercantile at gmail dot com or give us a call at 845-679-5172 between 11-6.  We’re open everyday between now and Christmas eve.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season!

Hello again lovely Design*Sponge readers!!

What a joy to see the wonderfully put together Hudson Valley guide posted on Design*Sponge today!  I had been thinking for quite some time that our neck of the woods was about due for a D*S guide and I’m so thrilled that Raina Kattelson took on the not-small task, and did it beautifully.  I was also honored and surprised to see that Still Life was included in the Woodstock list of shops to check out.   This also couldn’t have come at a better time with Holiday shopping season now in full effect.

Also, this Friday, December 4th is the Annual Woodstock Holiday Open House from noon-9pm.  Shops will be open late and there are tons of events and promotions planned all over town.  The shops also participate in a holiday window decorating contest so there should be plenty of eye candy to get everyone in the festive holiday spirit.  Stop by for some hot cocoa or a glass of wine Friday and feel a little warmer and fuzzier this season knowing that by doing your holiday shopping at independent shops you’re helping to support and sustain local small businesses and helping to keep the indie dream alive!
